Medical Device Company Makes Bold Commitment to Hire Veterans
“Our team feels so strongly about supporting our military men and women looking for work, that we are setting a goal to make veterans at least 20% of our workforce by the end of 2018,” commented NP Medical President, Luis J. Maseda. “When you hire a military veteran, you get a mission driven man or woman that understands the necessity of teamwork to accomplish the objective and to do so with unwavering integrity. They know the meaning of “a hard day’s work.”
Veterans at NP Medical currently make up 8% of the workforce. In order to reach their bold goal, NP Medical knows they need strong committed partners to find, attract and hire military talent. They are proud to announce their first veteran hire through Orion International, a firm of veterans for veterans that specializes in finding careers for those who have served in the military. Through Orion, NP Medical was able to immediately find pre-screened applicants with real world technical experience. “Beyond the match making, Orion has provided us with valuable coaching to ensure veterans make the cultural transition from military life to the civilian workforce” said Scott Courtemanche, Engineering Manager for NP Medical. Mr. Courtemanche added “Knowing to incorporate the specific needs of this talent pool is not always apparent to a company.” An example of internal veteran supports being adopted by NP Medical is the creation a veteran affinity group called NP - Mission Improving Lives (NP-MIL) to connect its existing veteran staff with new veteran hires as an informal peer resource for transitional needs.
“It’s a win-win to match the practical minds and hands of our veterans with a fulfilling civilian mission. We at NP provide that mission focus along with a reinforcing culture.” said Maseda reflecting on his belief in the power of an able, engaged and mission driven culture. Filling high skill manufacturing jobs in Massachusetts is a recognized challenge. The Massachusetts Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative (MAMC) has predicted that Massachusetts will need to fill 100,000 specialized manufacturing positions to meet the demand in just this decade. “I commend NP Medical for making opportunities available for veterans in this growing industry sector,” said Susan Windham-Bannister, President & CEO of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center. “In 2013 the MLSC helped organize and fund a Medtech Veterans (MVP) training program, and I am pleased to see these efforts continue throughout the industry." Governor Baker’s recent pledge of continued support to build the advanced manufacturing base will bring many benefits over time, but the immediate talent needs of growing businesses like NP Medical can be served by tapping into existing resources.
“Our commitment is to have the veteran composition of NP's team reach 20% of total employees. To meet the needs of this specific talent population we are tailoring our onboarding process and creating NP-MIL, our veteran affinity group. We look forward to working with Orion International, and other military advocacy groups, in the future to make more military veterans a successful part of the NP Medical team" said NP Medical President, Luis J. Maseda.
